Binny's Home Bartender: Caffè Romano

Caffè Romano

How to make

  1. Combine in mixing glass filled with ice. Stir
  2. Strain onto fresh ice in Old Fashioned glass
  3. Express lemon peel over the drink, then drop it into the drink

The cocktail we're featuring this time is of our own creation. The goal was to create a drink that does justice to the flavor profile of a lesser-known coffee drink, the Café Romano — espresso served with lemon peel. In putting it together, we played off of the proportions used in one of our favorite classics, the Vieux Carré.

For the Caffè Romano, we dropped the Bénédictine and replaced it with espresso liqueur to lend the recipe that initial coffee note. We also swapped out the rye whiskey in favor of dark rum, that delivers a delightfullt slight vanilla flavor. Once we'd built the base of the drink, we settled on plum bitters for the gentle lift they offer.
