Binny's Tasting Panel: Top Picks From Women Winemakers

As we close out Women’s History Month, we think about the incredible women, employed across our 46 stores, with whom we have the honor of working. Women that greet you when you enter, help you find the perfect bottle of wine, and pack up your purchase before you head home. They join a team of women dating back to Harold Binstein’s wife, Janice, who have contributed so much to this family-owned company and to the people of Illinois.

In this month’s Tasting Panel, representatives from the Women of Binny’s tasted over 20 wines made or led by women. Each year this selection on our shelves grows as more women make their mark in the vineyard, in the winery, and in winery leadership positions. We’re thrilled to celebrate their accomplishments and share our favorites with you!

Domaine Carneros Brut 2021

Centuries of Taittinger sparkling wine expertise, exported straight from Champagne, arrived in the cool California terroir of Carneros almost 40 years ago. Founding winemaker, Eileen Crane, helped build Domaine Carneros from the ground up, planning and overseeing the construction of the winery and crafting the debut vintage. She is a true pioneer in California traditional method sparklers, the doyenne of American sparkling wine. The 2021 Brut is just lovely, winning the panel over with notes of lemon zest, stone fruits, toasted coconut, marzipan and a hint of laminated pastry filled with vanilla cream.

Elena Walch Pinot Grigio 2023

Elena Walch, now joined by her daughters Julia and Karoline, is leading the Alto Adige quality revolution. The Walch family has been making exceptional wines in Nothern Italy for five generations and the results have never been better. The 2023 is so easy to drink, yet layered and nuanced. Orchard and citrus fruits, lemongrass, sage and a touch of mineral saltiness on the finish make this one of the best Pinot Grigios on our shelves.

Honig Sauvignon Blanc 2023

Honig’s entire winemaking team is made up of women! The head winemaker, Ashley Egelhoff, previously worked at the lauded Joseph Phelps Vineyards and continues her track record of crafting exceptional Napa Valley wines from sauvignon blanc and cabernet sauvignon. Despite the prime location of the estate in Rutherford, Honig still offers excellent Napa expressions at remarkably affordable prices. The 2023 boasts loads of fresh pomelo, honeydew melon, pear, lime, crushed rock, and bright gooseberry, with notes of magnolia wafting from the glass. Medium acidity keeps things fresh and light, playing off the rounded stone and orchard fruits. The result is a pleasingly soft texture. This is our go-to for an easy-drinking white that can satisfy any palate. Pair with almost anything from shellfish to summer salads to charcuterie- the choices are endless!

Luca Chardonnay G Lot 2021

Winemaking legend, Dr. Laura Catena, collaborated with Luis Reginato to make this incredible Argentine Chardonnay. Laura is a fourth-generation vintner, physician and author. She combines a formidable intellect with passionate winemaking and is often referred to as “the face of Argentine wine” for her role in promoting Mendoza and Argentine Malbec. This high-altitude chardonnay has an enticing bouquet of quince, cantaloupe and marzipan. Bright, lemony acidity on the palate gives way to subtle oak and merengue pie, leading to a lingering finish of mandarin orange and crushed gravel. This wine showcases some of the best qualities of cool climate chardonnay with New World ripeness, body and texture.

Casarena Owen's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Agrelo 2020

Martina Galeano, oenologist at Bodegas Casarena, has a master's degree from UC Davis where she carried out in-depth research into the effects of climate change. Not only is she making beautiful wines, but she’s helping the Argentine wine industry adjust and make the necessary viticultural changes. Juicy cherry and plum aromas complement a rich coffee flavor. A touch of bell pepper to lightens it up. This is a full-bodied cab that strikes a balance of fresh fruit flavors and structured tannins. A must-try for any California cab lover who wants to explore something new.

Burn Cottage Moonlight Race Pinot Noir 2023

Claire Mulholland, a native daughter of Central Otago, has amassed experience working in the world’s great pinot producing regions, including Oregon and Burgundy. The delicate nature of pinot noir paired with the intensity of fruit from Central Otago on New Zealand’s South Island allows her to bring her considerable winemaking chops to bear, creating a benchmark wine for the region and a truly world class expression of this beloved variety. Aromas of blue fruit, deep red berries, a slightly wild, gamey quality and a hint of driftwood make this medium bodied beauty an absolute delight. Better yet – the vineyard is owned by Chicago’s own Sauvage family!

Donatella Cinelli Colombini Brunello di Montalcino 2019

Donatella Cinelli Colombini has been a force in Montalcino for decades. She's a tireless promoter of the region and served as the national president of the Donne del Vino Association from 2016 to 2022. She now leads the Tuscan delegation of the same association. Donatella’s namesake Brunello is made by a women-led team, a remarkable circumstance in Italy. It’s a meal in the glass exuding scents of raspberry, black cherry and wild blackberry. Savory aromas of olive, terracotta, and dried herbs add to the complexity. This full-bodied wine has plenty of fine, framing tannins that will serve it well, if laid down, but beg for a vigorous decanting if opened now.

Chimney Rock Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Elizabeth Vianna, one of the few Latina winemakers in Napa Valley, is at the helm of this stellar Stags Leap District property. She’s been making elegant, balanced, low intervention wines for 20 years, and this polished, plush cabernet is a prime example. It's full-bodied, putting Elizabeth’s signature style on display, oozing aromas of rich red plums, cassis, blackberries, and cedar. Well-integrated oak provides accents of vanilla and spice that linger on the long juicy finish. It is the definition of outstanding Napa cabernet.
