Gruner Veltliner
What is Gruner Veltliner and how does it taste?
A little hard to pronounce but a lot of fun to drink, you need to add gruner veltliner to your drinking menu. Best in Austria, but making inroads on our West Coast, these dry whites are spicy and crisp. White and green peppercorns mingle with citrus fruit and in warmer regions verge into the tropical spectrum.
Where is gruner veltliner grown?
Gruner veltliner wines are primarily grown in Austria, where the grape is considered the country’s flagship white variety. The most renowned regions include Wachau, Kamptal, and Kremstal, all located along the Danube River in northeastern Austria. These areas offer ideal conditions with their mix of loess soils, cool climates, and steep terraced vineyards that enhance the grape’s signature acidity and minerality. Beyond Austria, gruner veltliner is also grown in smaller quantities in Germany, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and New World regions like the United States (notably Oregon and California), Australia, and New Zealand, where winemakers are exploring its crisp, food-friendly potential.

What food pairs well with gruner veltliner?
Gruner pairs with vegetables in ways where many other wines falter. Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese non-meat dishes are fantastic. Pair with Risi e Bisi for a glorious testament to spring. Either pork or chicken schnitzel are winning combinations as well. These crisp wines also handle creamy cheeses, not always an easy pairing.
