Ask the Whiskey Hotline - An Alternative to Weller 107
|
Every week, the Whiskey Hotline answers real questions from customers seeking special releases, gift ideas, and expert recommendations. With hundreds of inquiries pouring in annually, we spotlight one question each week and share our answer in hopes it helps you, too. One of my favorite bourbons is Weller Antique 107, but I can never find it. Do you have any suggestions? We sure do! At the Whiskey Hotline, we adore rye, here are some of our favorites. We’ve based our recommendations on the amount of rye in the mash bill, the age or the elevated proof of Thomas Handy. |
Larceny Barrel Proof BourbonLarceny is one of the wheated bourbons from Heaven Hill, and the barrel proof is an excellent option. The proof varies by release, but is typically between 115 and 125 proof. |
J. Henry & Sons La Flamme Reserve Bourbon Barrel Strength Finished in Armagnac CasksA great option from Wisconsin, this expression uses an heirloom corn variety that they grow called Bloody Butcher, and then finishes in Armaganac casks for extra fruit and spice flavor. |
J. Rieger & Co. Straight BourbonKansas City’s own uses both pot and column stills to enhance flavor and texture as well as a unique mash bill of 56% corn, 30% rye and 14% malted barley. |
Penelope Wheated BourbonPenelope has gained a reputation with bourbon aficionados for their affordable and innovative releases. Their wheated bourbon is four grain mash bill crafted from 74% corn, 16% wheat, 7% rye and 3% malted barley, aged 4-6 years and bottled at 95 proof. There is a lot to love in this bottle. |
