(15.5% alcohol; aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak): Bright, saturated ruby. Blackberry, licorice and menthol on the nose, complemented by cedary oak and a pungent mineral quality. Extremely smooth in texture but youthfully brooding, with inky black fruit and medicinal menthol dominating today. This structured, backward wine has a firm tannic spine that calls for another year or two of cellaring. Classically dry and saline, it doesn't quite come alive today but it possesses bulletproof fruit for the future. Became a bit creamier with 24 hours in the recorked bottle, suggesting that cellaring may bring more pliancy. -Stephen Tanzer, Jul 2017
