Few images capture summer more perfectly than a bright red wedge of fresh watermelon. Just as melons roll into stores, so do the watermelon beers. That’s right, now you can eat your watermelon and drink it too! Like a good chunk of melon, try each of these favorites first on its own, and then with a tiny pinch of salt.

Watermelon Beer

Odd Side Ales Wheatermelon

Odd Side Ales likes to play around with unconventional ingredients, and they’ve created some pretty interesting beers along the way. Wheatermelon is everything we’re looking for in a watermelon beer – natural watermelon flavor over a light and refreshing experience. At 4.0% abv this is one great session beer.

New Belgium Heavy Melon

Perhaps the most complex entrant on this list, New Belgium’s watermelon brew incorporates lime peel for citrus aromas and a crisp finish. Heavy Melon has a rockin' name, but its medium body melon flavor make for a nuanced and crushable brew. Juicy with interesting savory qualities, it finishes with a touch of citrus and cucumber.

Ballast Point Watermelon Dorado

Ballast Point is taking some of their famously fruity IPA's and kicking them up a notch by adding fruit to the mix. The nose on Watermelon Dorado is bright, sweet and aromatic, like a freshly unwrapped watermelon hard candy. On the palate, it’s a wonderful mix of fresh cut watermelon, meyer lemon and grapefruit. Malt sweetness and hop bitterness are perfectly balanced, making this 10% DIPA dangerously drinkable.

21st Amendment Hell or High Watermelon

Hell or High Watermelon begins as a light wheat beer which undergoes a secondary fermentation with fresh watermelon. Not only do you get genuine watermelon flavor, but the finished beer is refreshingly dry. Fan of gin cocktails? This makes a fun mixer.   Check out the Beer Buzz for updates on new beer, tastings, sales and more!
