Meet Your Local Binny's Beer Guy: Lincoln Park
Adam Vavrick is the resident beer expert at our Lincoln Park location. He has worked at what some locals refer to as Castle Vav for the past three years. Among other accolades, Adam is a certified beer server in the Cicerone program, has tasted for the 2011 and 2012 World Beer Awards, and has been a panelist for the Beverage Tasting Institute since 2010. He is well known in the local beer scene, having been featured in Ale Street News, The Chicago Tribune, The Red Eye, Metromix, BeerDownload, The Chicago Sun Times, and WGN Radio. Adam is originally from Washington DC, turns 30 on October 2nd, and is engaged to a Windy City Roller. Besides beer, Adam's other love is the audio industry. He owns a modular synthesizer, and used to work in the audio industry doing synthesis, sound design, and audio engineering. Adam is a valuable asset to the Binny's team to say the least. You can find him in the aisle at the Lincoln Park Binny's, or on twitter @beeradam. We wanted to dig a little bit more into the interesting life he lives, so we lined up a few questions for him: Name a beer on your shelf that no one has ever heard of. "Loverbeer! (pronounced Looooverbeer). Well, maybe they've heard of it by now, because I've been telling EVERYONE I can about it. It's sour beer from the Piedmont region of Italy, and it's freakin' fanTAStic. They have a few styles, and they're all wonderful." What is in your refrigerator right now? "Ha! Which one? The main fridge has a bunch of bombers of beer from Three Floyds, Pipeworks, Sam Smith Stingo from 2010, all three Goose Island sours from various years, condiments, Lime Lacroix, eggs, turkey, leftover tortellini soup, sausage, peaches, parmesean cheese, and spinach. The beer fridge is, as you might expect, filled with beer. All kinds of beers are in there: Goose Island's Barrel Aged Christmas Ale from 2007, Russian River Temptation, Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, Flat 12 IPA & Coffee Porter, Oskar Blues Ten Fidy from 2009, a 12pk of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale cans. Loads of other stuff including some beers I'm cracking on my birthday, specifically, 1982 Vintages of Thomas Hardy's and Gale's Prize Old Ale. The Kegerator is loaded with Revolution's Rise with a sixpack of Lagunitas Daytime hanging out next to it." On a scale of 1-10, how weird are you? "Pretty weird I guess...maybe an 8? I own an Analog Modular Synthesizer. I have a Predator tattoo. I enjoy listening to Nurse With Wound. I've studied Ritual Magick. I wore makeup and fishnets in high school. I don't care about sports, religion, or barrel-aged stouts. There's a bunch of other examples, but I shouldn't type them on a company computer because you sure as hell wouldn't post them!" Name a fall seasonal beer without Oktoberfest or Pumpkin in the name that should be on beer geeks radar? "Founders Harvest Ale. It's the only beer I'll fight beer geeks for." If you knew it was your last day on earth, how would you spend it? "Probably not all that differently then any other day: Play with the modular, drink some beer, listen to music, say goodbye to my friends."
