This past week Goose Island introduced two brand new beers, Sofie and Juliet. They will join Pere Jacques and Matilda as part of the Goose Island Reserve line of beers. Along with Sofie and Juliet, Goose Island released Demolition, Naughty Goose, and Red Felt. These three beers have been around for awhile, but are new to being bottled. They will comprise the Clybourn Heritage Collection line of beers. I have listed the descriptions of the beers below, which I found on Goose Island's website.
Goose Island Reserve
Style: Sour Ale / American Wild Ale, 6.7% ABV
"Fermented with wild yeasts and aged in cabernet barrels with blackberries, Juliet is a tart, fruity, complex ale. Notes of wood, tannin, dark fruit and spice make Juliet an ideal beer to suggest to Pinot Noir enthusiasts and beer drinkers who are fond of Belgian sour ales."
Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale, 6.5% ABV
"Fermented with wild yeasts and aged in wine barrels with orange peel, Sofie is a tart, dry, sparkling ale. A subtle, spicy white pepper note, a hint of citrus from the orange peel and a creamy vanilla finish make Sofie an intriguing choice for Champagne drinkers and beer drinkers who are fond of Belgian Saisons."
The Clybourn Heritage Collection
Style: Belgian Style Golden Ale, 6.7% ABV
"Brewed to honor the brave souls who kept our brewpub open in the early 90s while wrecking balls tore down the mall around us. Dry and smooth, with a grassy, citrus aroma and honey malt middle."
Style: American Brown Ale, 5.4% ABV
"Naughty Gooses assertive roasted malt body, fruity aroma, unique blend of American hops, and chocolate and caramel notes make it a favorite of our brewpub regulars who are in the mood to indulge their darker side by simply enjoying something thats so indulgent it seems "naughty."
Style: American Red Ale, 6% ABV
"A big, hoppy red ale pack with aroma and flavor from American hops. Red Felt is a long time favorite of hop heads at our original Brewpub, where the pool tables were covered with Red Felt."
If you don't happen to recognize the packaging of the new Goose Island stuff when you are in the store, this will be for a couple reasons. First of all, all five beers that I just listed are only available in 22oz bottles. Pere Jacques and Matilda are now both available in 22oz bottles as well, but will still be acquirable in 4-packs. Next, Goose Island has given their labels a makeover. The labels on all five of the "new" beers are plain and simple compared with how the Reserve beers used to be. Instead of having an essay pasted on the front of the bottle, Pere Jacques and Matilda now only have the name, date, and style on the front of the bottle. These two have also have new packaging; look for a bright yellow 4-pack instead of that unsightly brown one they used to come in.
Sofie and Juliet are limited releases, and may already be out at some Binny's, so call in advance if these are the only two you are looking for. They will both be released again in July, so you won't be completely out of luck if your local Binny's has sold out already. On the other hand, Demolition, Naughty Goose, and Red Felt are going to be obtainable year round. Goose Island is on the right track in bottling these previously inaccessible beers. Now somehow I just have to convince them to start bottling their Imperial IPA again, and everything will be immaculate.
