Binny's Top 10 Cigars of 2016

#1 Hoyo La Amistad Toro 6x50

The Hoyo La Amistad was a unique project from Hoyo. They collaborated with AJ Fernandez to produce our #1 cigar of 2016. The collaboration comes from A.J.’s desire to bring something unique to a classic line he grew up with in Cuba. A.J. is featured a couple times on our list as he has been dazzling the industry with his blends and dedication to fine cigar production. La Amistad translated in English meaning friendship. The healthy doses of pepper lead the way with background flavors of cocoa, espresso, and dried fruit. This cigar is a prime example of strength, flavor, and construction executed at the highest level. Join us in toasting A.J. and Hoyo for this accomplishment Binny’s #1.

#2 Bellas Artes Toro 6x54

The second installment on our list is once again from A.J. Fernandez. Innovative hybrids and unique multi-national blending show us A.J.’s pursuit of high quality premium cigars knows no bounds. The Bellas Artes had us from the foot toast to the nub. This cigar delivers a strong Nicaraguan core complimented by Honduran and Brazilian leaf. The main story line on this cigar is the rojita wrapper. This hybrid of Conneticut 8212, Corojo 99 and Havana 2000 is unique to the Bellas Artes and developed by the brilliant minds at A.J. Fernandez cigars. Pick up our #2 selection and enjoy a one-of-a-kind cigar with notes of light pepper, cream and sweetness.

#3 Undercrown Connecticut Shade Robusto 5x54

What can be said that hasn’t about Drew Estate. The company that proclaimed “The Rebirth of Cigars” has once again produced an excellent spin off. Our #3 selection is the Undercrown Connecticut Shade. The story of the undercrown should be known to the majority of smokers. Johnathan Drew allowed his torcedor (the cigar rollers) into the selection of Liga Privada tobacco to make a cigar they could smoke while rolling. When he lit up their creation he knew it was headed for retail. Willy Herrera did something special with this blend. Trial and error found a balance within a Connecticut that could please the most veteran smoker as well as the time to time Aficianado. Approachable and delicious we are all looking forward to the future of Undercrown and Drew Estate.

#4 HVC Edicion Especial 2015 5x46

For the #4 cigar we selected the HVC Edition Especial. The 2nd producer on our list with a strong Cuban tie HVC has made a big splash since they first appeared in 2011. We are happy to have them in our humidors and hopefully in yours. Reinier Lorenzo is the mind behind the HVC Edition Especial and the Cuban connection as HVC is a nod to Havana City where he lived most of his life. The HVC Edition Especial 2015 is a blend of high quality Nicaraguan tobacco from two farms rolled and wrapped in a brownish red San Andreas wrapper that looks like a smokers dream. The smoke is powerful and subtle all at once with notes of pepper wood and earth. This cigar is truly worth lighting up and enjoying the “spring” weather.

#5 Last Call Geniales Natural 4.5x48

The last call is the final cigar from A.J.Fernandez on our list this year. We promise this is just the way the voting worked out. Honestly A.J. had a very good 2016. This cigar has quickly become a mainstay and continues to shine as a medium bodied cigar that can please several palates. The last call is a small slow burner perfect for pairing with a morning coffee or as a small after dinner treat. This cigar is a great option for any smoker as it is complex and delicious. The Last Call offers notes of sweet espresso, caramel ,and just the right hint of spice. This is definitely not the last call on these cigars but still worth grabbing some for anytime of day.

#6 Macanudo Inspirado Toro 5.75x52

Hopefully you were watching your emails for our February cigar sale that had quite a few gems. The Macanudo Inspirado has shown us a bolder side of the staple mild cigar brand. The Inspirado was aimed at providing a great experience for the medium to full smoker. The combinations of Dominican, Honduran and Nicaraguan tobaccos blend artfully within the San Agustin wrapper. If you walked in and overlooked Macanudos in the past STOP and take a second look as these are not the classic cafes we all know.

#7 HVC Cerro 6x54

HVC is impressing with their second appearance on the Binny’s Top Ten. The Cerro name pays tribute to one of the oldest neighborhoods in Havana. The blend is comprised of some of the most select tobaccos from Esteli and Jalapa. The tobaccos for the Cerro are aged up to three years to bring forward its natural flavors. The Cerro is capped with a gorgeous rounded triple cap. This cigar produces a heavy amount of cedar and pepper notes to start but transforms to a floral sweetness that is just fantastic.

#8 Caldwell Blind Man's Bluff Robusto 5x50

Caldwell cigars were new to the Binny’s humidor in 2016. Caldwell was founded in 2014 with the idea of being built by “friends for friends”. Since their introduction into our humidors customers have been taken back by the quality of the cigars, but it didn’t surprise us. Caldwell delivered on the statement of attention to every detail and flavor first. The Blind Mans Bluff is produced in Honduras with an Ecuadorian habano wrapper, Honduran binder, and filler comprised of Honduran and Dominican tobaccos. The flavors are a pronounced creaminess with leathery coffee followed up by a dry cocoa and nuts. Simply delicious.

#9 Roma Craft Cromagnon Knuckle Dragger 4x52

Roma Craft has been with us for a couple of years now and they have become more popular every year. The success that Roma Craft has enjoyed in our humidors is rightfully earned. They make some truly excellent cigars. The Cromagnon Knuckle Dragger cemented itself on our list for very good reason its a great cigar. The Conneticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper melds itself seamlessly with a truly unique cameroon binder. The blending of Nicaraguan filler can barely be contained; its bursting with power and flavor. The flavors include heaping amounts of black pepper and leather which give way to, you guessed it, more black pepper. Followed up with notes of earth and slight hints of hickory smoke. This is a cigar is not for the mild smoker.

#10 Binny's XXV MB Anniversary '92-'17 5.5x54

This is a cigar that has flown under the radar. Our anniversary blend, the Binny’s XXV, is the first box pressed cigar that has been blended for us. Our friends at La Aurora took the challenge of truly encapsulating our humidor’s history in a smoke. This box pressed Cigar is a one-of-a-kind for us. Based on an existing blend this cigar has some high quality tobacco similar to the ever popular La Aurora Vintage 2003 Salamone. The flavors are excellent, but I will leave the rest to you. Enjoy!
