"The 2010 Napanook (98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot) reveals a pungent, spicy, earthy, slightly herbal nose, and an exuberant mouthfeel with lots of plum, licorice, red and black currants and a hint of sweet cherries. The wine is slightly more in-your-face and aggressive than most Napanooks, but I enjoyed its exuberant style."

2012 Chappellet Mountain Cuvee

"The nose offers beautiful layers of baked cherry, blackberry, cassis, chocolate, cola and anise, with hints of cedar and fresh herbs adding Bordeaux-like complexity. On the palate, plum and cherry flavors mingle with sweet oak, cocoa and baking spices. While supple tannins and a smooth, lingering texture make this wine immediately pleasurable, its mountain roots give it the structure to gain additional depth and complexity with cellaring."

2011 Beaulieu Vineyards Tapestry Reserve

"The 2011 Reserve Tapestry is another standout from Beaulieu in a very challenging year. Bright floral notes lead to tobacco, mint, licorice and pine, all in a brilliant, mid-weight wine long on minerality, focus and pure brilliance. This is a very strong showing."

2011 Opus One

"The 2011 Opus One may turn out to be one of the surprises of the year. A brilliant, precise wine, the 2011 impresses for its energy. Sweet floral and spiced notes lead to expressive dark red berries, mocha, anise and new leather in a brilliant Opus One. Readers will note the lower than normal presence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the 2011, which is typical for a year in which blenders play an important role. The blend is 71% Cabernet, 11% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot/8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec."
