"Bright ruby-red. Black raspberry, cherry compote, potpourri and Asian spices on the highly perfumed nose. Juicy red and dark berry flavors stain the palate, showing terrific clarity and spicy lift. The spicy quality comes back strong on the finish, which is framed by silky, harmonious tannins. In a graceful, almost weightless style, with zero excess fat but noteworthy flavor intensity."

2011 Chapelle St Theodoric Chateauneuf du Pape Le Grand Pin

"The 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Grand Pin is unquestionably one of the top wines of the vintage. It possesses a dark ruby color as well as abundant notes of kirsch liqueur, licorice and loamy soil. Full-bodied, long, sexy and opulent, it is a hedonistic as well as intellectual turn-on."

2012 Domaine Charvin Chateauneuf du Pape

"More backwards and tannic, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape (same blend as the 2012) was tight and structured at the time of this tasting (as was the 2011, which was much more approachable and open when I tasted it from a bottle in the U.S.), with serious pepper, herbs de Provence and assorted darker berry-styled fruit. Cutting a broad path across the palate, with full-bodied richness, bright acidity and edgy tannin, it should soften up over the next year and be reasonably accessible with short-term cellaring. A solid 12-15 year drink window sounds about right."

2010 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape

"Dark, dense and very closed now, this has a tremendous core of crushed plum, linzer torte and blackberry confiture waiting in reserve. Ample singed cedar and mesquite, warm paving stone and black tea notes lurk in the background and glide through the finish. features serious grip, but wonderful integration. Should cruise in the cellar."
