"Bright ruby. Zesty red berry aromas and flavors with a spicy note that gains strength with air. Taut and linear on the finish, which has good focus but a slightly tart edge. I also tried the 2010 version of this wine and found it too reduced to rate with any confidence."

2011 Michel Gassier Nostre Pais Costieres de Nimes Rouge

"An 800 case blend of Grenache, Carignan and Mourvedre (there’s also some Cinsault and Syrah in there as well), the 2012 Costieres de Nimes Nostre Pais is an old vine selection that spends 6 months in French oak prior to bottling. Perfumed and elegant, with medium to full-bodied richness and a layered, seamless feel on the palate, this beauty offers up notes of creme de cassis, lavender, while herbs and pepper."

2011 Domaine Saint Damien Gigondas Vieilles Vignes

"Dark ruby. Ripe cherry and dark berries on the nose, with notes of licorice and black pepper gaining strength with air. Big and broad-shouldered for the vintage, offering weighty dark fruit flavors bolstered by acidity. Shows a plummy quality on the lengthy, gently tannic finish."

2009 Saint Jean du Barroux L'Argile Cotes du Ventoux

"A stunning reference point for what can be achieved in the Cotes du Ventoux, the 2009 l’Argile is a blend75% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 5% Carignan and 5% Cinsault aged 30 months in concrete tanks prior to being bottled unfiltered. The 2009 l’Argile exhibits a flowery yet quintessentially Provencal set of aromatics that smells like an open-air marketplace. Abundant red and black fruits, roasted herb, garrigue, licorice, lavender and spring flower aromas are followed by an opulent, rich wine with full-bodied power as well as incredible complexity and density. This is one of the most intriguing, individualistic wines I have tasted this year."
