"The 2004 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe comes across as decidedly powerful and broad-shouldered next to the Vignolo. A wall of massive tannins makes it hard to see through to the wine’s potential but with air the multiple dimensions of its personality begin to open up. Dark fruit, tar, mint, pine and a host of other spiced, balsamic aromas and flavors make an appearance on the large-scaled, dramatic finish. The 2004 San Giuseppe is an utterly mind-blowing, dramatic Barolo from Cavallotto."

2009 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo

"The 2009 Barolo (aged three years in botte grande and one year in bottle) opens with a crystalline, ruby color and shows extreme focus and precision. Rosehip, forest berry, wild mint, lightly toasted pine nut, dried ginger and underbrush all appear on the ever-changing bouquet. The wine is extremely finessed and silky on the close with beautiful menthol freshness at the end. In Barolo tradition, fruit was normally sourced from many vineyards. The concept of single vineyards is relatively new. In keeping with tradition, this Barolo sees fruit from the Canubbi, San Lorenzo, Rue, and Rocche di La Morra vineyards."

2010 Vietti Barolo Lazzarito

"Good full red. Musky strawberry, pungent raspberry, game and minerals on the enticing nose. Elegant, silky and juicy, with terrific cut and lift to the red berry and blood orange flavors. Showcases the energy of the 2010 vintage at its best; in fact, this makes the 2009 Lazzarito seem almost raisiny by comparison. The juicy, slowly mounting finish features suave tannins and a lingering suggestion of orange. This beauty is sexy already but has the spine to evolve positively in bottle for 15 years." -Stephen Tanzer

2009 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia

"The 2009 Barolo Cascina Francia is a stunning wine. Roberto did not make Monfortino in 2009, therefore that wine was declassified and added here. The results are truly spectacular. The wine shows the soft fullness that is characteristic of the vintage, backed by tight tannins that pull the wine together. Dark fruit, licorice, chopped herb, white truffle, tar and pressed rose form a united aromatic front."
