2008 Bodegas Montecillo Rioja Reserva

"The 2008 Reserva has a lot more going on. Both nose and palate are deeper than the 2009 Crianza, with ripe fruit, floral aromas and hints of the telltale notes of the properly aged traditional Rioja: leather, incense, tea leaves and smoke. The palate is balanced, with good acidity. This is a great commercial Rioja at a very attractive price."

2005 Hacienda Lopez de Haro Reserva

"The 2005 Hacienda Lopez de Haro Reserva is a blend of 90% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano and 5% Garnacha aged for 20 months in French and American oak. It has a beautiful, rounded, sensual bouquet with hints of over-ripe Satsuma and gravel. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of piquancy on the entry. It has crisp acidity and taut tannins on the dry, dusky finish but it remains extremely well-focused."

2009 Sierra Cantabria Reserva Unica

"Fresh raspberry and floral scents, with suave Asian spice and cola qualities adding complexity. Energetic red fruit flavors show excellent balance and sweetness, picking up floral pastille and mineral nuances with air. Finishes clean and precise, nicely framed by smooth, harmonious tannins. In a distinctly elegant style, especially for the vintage."

Big and bold with tobacco and bing cherries, a little dusty but more modern than most old world Rioja's. The 2nd day is even better , takes on even more deeper flavors.
