"these grapes were harvested with the intent to make two wines, Merlot from Har Bracha and Cabernet from Shiloh. During barrel ageing, I played with creating more complexity in each wine by blending small amounts of each into the other, and as a lark experimented with a total blend of the Cabernet and Merlot with a single barrel of Petite Sirah added. The total blend was markedly superior to any other cepage. It was a result of what ecologists call 'emergent properties', characteristics that emerge in a complex milieu that were previously unobserved in the independent parts of the total. Discovering these emergent properties while blending wine defines one aspect of the art of wine making."
