"Seductive nose is juicy, with ripe, fruity aromas of baked apple, baked pear, nutmeg, vanilla bean, cardamom and dried orange peel. Flavor is firm, bittersweet, focused and more maple-like than sugary. Ends moderately oily and keenly bittersweet. In that league of aged rums that begin to resemble brandies." 90-95 pts.

As a "mixologist" I look for specific flavor profiles in spirits. Zaya Gran Reserva 12-Yr is the most vanilla- and caramel-forward rum I've experienced. The Calvados-like complexity and overt apple notes are immediately apparent. The mouthfeel is very smooth and buttery, almost oily (in a good way). This is a very specific rum, but an amazing one, particularly for the price.
