"Replaces one of my all-time favorite Scotches, the Five Star (in Spirit Journal) Johnnie Walker Gold. Amber/old gold color; excellent purity. Opening nose is pleasantly biscuity and cookie dough-like, with nuances of nutmeg, old saddle leather, and tropical fruits; further air contact gives rise to a floral, grainy, inland Scotland bouquet that speaks of Speyside more than any other whisky district. Entry is grainy sweet, with integrated flavors of Graham cracker and spice cake; midpalate mirrors the entry, adding touches of oak resin, salt, and hard cheese. Finishes well and elegantly."

"Light amber orange color. The malty bouquet emits mature, evolved scents of cocoa, buttered nuts, soft fruit and paraffin. The oily mouth presence is exceptionally velvety at entry; at midpalate, sweet, estery flavors of ripe pears, grain mash and oak enchant the taste buds. Aftertaste is peppery and candied. What makes the whisky so sublime if the backbone malt whisky from the Clynelish Distillery. The finest Johnnie Walker in the marketplace."

""I know that some narrow-minded SJ subscriber malt whisky snobs are on their laptops firing off emails of protest over me choosing a blended Scotch as my Number Four pick for Scotch. But, what can I say other than I love this supple, fully integrated blend because it displays its Highland malt core from start to finish, and, most importantly, its age is at the sweet spot for Scotch whisky (is it any wonder that five of the top seven Scotches are 17-18 years old?). JW Gold is that rare constructed whisky in which its innate power is in ideal harmony with its elegance. The equal measures of strength and grace never cease to astound and impress me at a primal level of enjoyment."

"Nose 24: At first it seems a level nose with little happening. But look again... deeper. Stirring in the glass are diced apples and moist raisins, a squirt of something peaty, and a honey and golden syrup mix. Sweet yet weighty with just enough smoke and oak to anchor.
Taste 24: The silky arrival magnifies the smoky edge of this: some Caol Illa here, I guess, doing what Caol Illa does best - buck up blends. But also that hallmark honey thread is there to savour, linking beautifully with soft grains carrying vanilla and fudge; meanwhile playful spices... play!
Finish 23: A beautiful denouement in which the vanilla-edged oak refuses to hide, but smoke and barley dovetail in wonderful counterbalance.
Balance 25: At the moment I would say that the blending lab at Diageo is going through a kind of legendary period. In years to come people will look back at it fondly and with a healthy degree of awe and ask: "do you remember when?" or they will point to this era and say: "that's when it all started." White Horse 12, Old Parr and Johnnie Walker Gold: three blends where the gauntlet has been laid down to all: blenders and drinkers alike. And also where I say to Scotch lovers: well, you might love malts, but just how many can match these for brain-exploding complexity? This is another astonishing whisky which just has to be included in people's must have lists."

Great Scotch October 05, 2013

This is a great scotch. I know the purist won't like a blended scotch being called great, but I just care about taste and texture. The only reason why I don't give this a 5 is because Johnny Blue gets that.

Light smoke, velvet texture, drink it neat with a touch of water to open it. A glass of ice water next to it to cool your palate.
