"First whiffs pick up scents of fresh pineapple, cedar, and paraffin; later sniffings detect subtle notes of baked pear and sweet oak. Palate entry features a firm, moderately oily, and velvety texture; by midpalate, integrated flavors of ripe peach, pear drops and bran delight the taste buds. Finish is extended, semisweet and coconut-like. Replaces the 12-year-old French Oak Finish. Best Buy." 90-95 pts.

Macallan 12 Year Old Traditional

"The initial aroma is sweetish, winey and oaky; aeration allows the aroma to expand to include marzipan, treacle, molasses, honey, vanilla bean, cinnamon and cocoa butter. The palate entry is sweet, creamy and assertive; at midpalate the flavor becomes intensely nutty, buttery and bacon fat-like, with the beginnings of rancio. Remains one of Speyside’s standard-bearer 12 year olds." 90-95 pts.

Nose - Leads off on pine, resinous, kind of like rosemary. Lemon, honey, vanilla, "green" fruitiness (apple, pear), brown sugar, clove and a bit of almond in the background. Floral. Taste - starts off slightly bitter and plywood-y, developing in to some honey, vanilla, and nutty flavors. Something is kind of raw tasting about this. Finish is on the green fruit with a bit of honey and clove.Overall this isn't really that well balanced...while I very much like older Glenlivet, and the Nadurra, this doesn't do it for me. Spend your $60 elsewhere.

The Glenlivet 15 French Oak February 16, 2014

Oak is apparent on the nose, along with apples, pumpkin, vanilla, and allspice. Palate: Oak and vanilla flavors continue, fruit flavor turns towards pears. A malty note emerges. Buttery mouth feel. Finish: Oak peaks in the finish, flavors turn from fruity to spicy. Cinnamon, toffee, bitter cocoa, and nutmeg. Overall: The oak flavor dominates, but doesn't overpower everything else. Nothing outstanding. A higher ABV could help a lot. 82/100
