Bourbon Barrel Aged Wines

Tagged:

Bourbon barrel aged wines have exploded in popularity alongside bourbon. We’re happy to offer three different takes on this up and coming style. These wines are aged in traditional oak and then finished for several months in used bourbon barrels to add complexity without the sweet bourbon notes overwhelming the wine.

Wine Hotline Hits the Road: Phelan Segur

Tagged:

We visited the Phelan Sugur property after an already daunting morning of tastings in the Medoc. Pauillac and St Estephe are tough on the enamel but we persisted on to Phelan Segur and arrived just before lunchtime. We maneuvered down the long drive, walked through the expansive, serene grounds and discovered our gracious hosts in their beautiful, sun-filled tasting room.

Wine Hotline Hits the Road: Canon la Gaffeliere

When I started looking forward to my first trip to Bordeaux, one of the places I was most excited to visit was Canon la Gaffeliere. Beyond the great esteem I have for the wines, I was fascinated at the idea of meeting Comte Stephan von Neipperg. The guy/count is a legend; every person I know who’s visited talks about an experience with him. Known for his colorful style, wit, and enthusiasm, he spent the last thirty years innovating and elevating the quality of wines at his family’s estates.

A Visit from Louis M. Martini’s Winemaker Michael Eddy

Tagged:

Louis M. Martini winemaker Michael Eddy was in our Naperville location showcasing his outstanding line up of wines for members of the Binny’s staff. He oversees the entire production process of creating wine, including: grape harvesting, crushing, fermentation, aging, blending, and bottling while keeping the individual characteristics of the Martini’s flagship varietal cabernet sauvignon consistent.

A Visit From Olivier Krug

Tagged:

Olivier Krug’s presentation resonated with me early when he spoke of pairing my two passions, music and wine. “Music is important to Krug” he said, “The experience is about what you feel”. I’ve always thought of my love of wine and my love of music separately, but it was enlightening to hear him speak passionately about intertwining both. Music proved an especially apt metaphor as he presented his four wines. The first three were all top notch wines that any Champagne house could claim as a tete de cuvee. But not Krug, whose non-vintage Grand Cuvee enjoys pride of place. Compared to the first three, the Grand Cuvee is a harmonious whole, with the other three sounding a strong note.

Wine Hotline Hits the Road: Margaux

“We are not lost,” she said. “I know exactly where we are.”

Margaux

I was on a bicycle in the middle of Margaux. A few of us had stopped for a photo and lost the rest of our group. Marie Helen of Brane Cantenac was my guide, and she assured me we would reconnect. “They are probably headed to Chateau Margaux.” I nodded and gleefully started peddling. A few minutes later, we coasted down the driveway to one of the most recognizable wineries in all the world. I didn’t mind being stranded. We unfortunately didn’t taste the famous first growth that day; but soon after we reconvened with our colleagues and continued our rainy but scenic adventure. In spite of the persistent clouds, we circled through vineyards and made brief stops at about a dozen other chateaux including Palmer, Rauzan Segla, and Lascombes. These are gorgeous, impeccable properties worth a visit, although I might recommend you drive instead.
