That was the sound you heard in the Plainfield Binny’s Beverage Depot store this past Saturday in honor of Mother’s Day. With over 30 bottles of bubbles, featuring true Champagne, sparkling wines, Cava, Prosecco and even some Moscato d’Asti for a sweet treat to choose from, there was no shortage of laughter and happy memories.
One of the highlights of the day was when a woman who was impeccably dressed and around the age of 70 came up to me and thanked me for arranging this event. She said she and her daughter and enjoyed the time together and of course the wide variety of bubbles they were able to sample. There were many children (sons & daughters) who enjoyed this time with their moms, and this helped them decide what to buy to share with their mothers on Sunday in celebration of all their mothers have done for them.
Mothers deserve recognition and appreciation year round, but especially on Mother’s Day. They are gentle yet strong. They show they care in so many ways; they are patient when you’re foolish and give guidance when it is needed. It seems they can do most anything and master every task. So when I saw so many mothers enjoying the precious time with bubbles and their loved ones my heart smiled.
Graham Beck Brut Reserve from South Africa is a beautiful harmony of chardonnay and pinot noir. Rich, creamy and full of Granny Smith apple flavors. The Graham Beck Brut Rose is a beautiful salmon pink with fresh strawberry flavors on the palate. Both are so reasonably priced at $15.99 that this could be my new weekly sparkler!
The sold out winner was the 2009 Vinchio Vaglio Serra Nivasco Brachetto for only $14.99. Low in alcohol and very fruity, it is an easy wine to like with its strawberry nose and light fizz, it was one of the favorites of the mothers at the tasting.
A true Champagne that I got to taste for the first time, that I was amazed with, was the Billecart-Salmon Brut Reserve priced at $55.99. Maybe not your everyday, school night pick, but with the tiny bubbles, honey and ginger, fresh peaches, great balance and a bone-dry finish, I have to add this one to my Champagne wish list.
Maybe Mark Twain said it best: “Too much of anything is bad, but too much Champagne is just right.”
