  1. Another great value bourbon to try is the Jim Beam Black 8yr for about $24. I got to sit down with the guys from the Beverage Testing Institute in Chicago for a blind bourbon tasting and the Jim Beam Black was highly rated.

  2. 100% agree on the quality of Beam Black, it might be (with Baker’s) the most overlooked bottling from the Beam/Small Batch range, but remember the value piece of the equation. At $23.99 you also have to consider things like Weller 12 year ($24.99), Elmer T. Lee ($26.99), Sazerac Straight Rye ($26.99), Johnny Drum 12 year ($22.99), and even Old Forester Signature and Wild Turkey 101 proof (both $19.99) in that price range. The key here is the quality in combination with what you have to pay for the bottle.

  3. Old Weller 107 at $20 and Old Grandad 100 at $18 are good values also (though I think prices on these have come up recently). Weller is a wheated bourbon (think Maker’s) so it can be a nice change from the usual.I couldn’t agree more on the Rittenhouse; it’s a fantastic tasting rye with good body.

  4. I have had the VOB 100 on Brett’s recommendation and fully agree on the value. Definitely an enjoyable pour, like it better than a lot of $20 – $30 bourbons. Elmer T. Lee is very good as well, and I am looking forward to trying the Rittenhouse Rye, Weller 12, and Johnny Drum at some point in the near future.

  5. On the subject of value bourbon, Ancient Ancient Age is excellent for $16. I don’t see it listed on your website (I see the regular Ancient Age) but I believe I saw the AAA in your Lakeview store last Sunday.

  6. Much overlooked, the Black Bottle is an excellent deal Will be looking forward to it so long as the weather stays cool in Chicago.

  7. Brett, I apologize in advance because this is probably not the correct thread for my question. However, I could not find another suitable one. I am looking to experiment further in tequilas. I like full-bodied, strong-flavored tastes. I love Islay scotch whiskies, particularly Ardbeg and Caol Ila. Among tequilas, the best I have liked so far is Cazadores Anejo. I have the Patron (Anejo, also I think), but it is bland compared to the Cazadores. Also have had Herradura Reposado, but again, I prefer the Cazadores. Do you have any tequila recommendations for me? Do you hold tequila tastings?
